The event: Youth Climate security Talks 2022

A two session digital masterclass on how to climate proof military organisations.

In two digital sessions, you can join military youth from the Netherlands, United Kingdom and Canada to discuss how to climate proof military organisation. In session 1, you will learn more about “climate security” from military experts and getto know the other participants. In two weeks following session 1, you are challenged to think of ideas to climate proof military ourganisaitons in a interntaional team. In session 2, we dive deeper into how military youth can play an role in making military organisation climate proof.

Event outline:

Session 1 (17 November): 

  • Introduction climate security –Luitenant-General ret Richard Nugee (Former Non-executive Climate Change and Sustainability Strategy Lead UK Ministry of Defence).
  • Military tactical implications of climate change –Vice-Admiral ret Ben Bekkering (Former Netherlands Military Representative to NATO and EU).
  • Operational advantage of renewable energy technolgies – Bart Zwiep (Innovation Manager Royal Dutch Army).
  • Canada’s Contribution to Combatting Climate Change and Security – Albert Chan
  • Start of the Challenge: How to climate proof military organisations?

Between session 1 and 2:

If interested to participate in the challange, you are assigned to a military “climate security” expert and an international team of military youth to think of ideas how to climate proof military organisations. You are given the possibility to present your ideas to an expert panel on 1 december. Finally we will discuss how we can make the ideas of the different teams into reality.

Session 2 (1 december)

  • NATO’s contribution to combatting climate change and security – Michael Ruhle (head of NATO Climate and Energy Security Section)
  • Practical ideas on how to climate proof military organisations – military NATO youth.
  • Discussion about ideas with General Middendorp and Michael Ruhle.
  • How to implement ideas to climate proof military organisations? – General (ret) Tom Middendorp (Former Chief of Defence NL, Chair International Military Council on Climate and Security).

Youth Climate Security Talks is an international program that enhances climate security awareness through youth engagement. 

We strive for a future in which recognition of the security dimension of climate change brings forth new opportunities, (i.e. ideas/solutions/relationships) to mitigate, adapt to, and become resilient to climate change.
